Aldi will invest £17.5m in solar panels at 230 more UK stores between 2027 and 2031, taking its total investment in solar power to around £26m.
The installations will help the supermarket generate more of its own renewable electricity, with each system capable of meeting up to 30 per cent of a store’s annual energy needs.
The latest investment builds on an £8.4m programme to install solar panels at 100 additional stores during 2025 and 2026. Aldi expects more than 500 stores to have solar panels by the end of 2026.
“We have plenty of space on our store roofs, so it makes sense to use it,” said Aldi UK managing director of national real estate Jonathan Neale.
“We want solar power to become a normal part of how we run our stores, and this investment will help us bring it to even more locations over the coming years.”
“By generating more of our own electricity, we can reduce our reliance on the grid and make our stores more sustainable.”
The announcement is part of Aldi’s wider investment in its UK estate. Earlier this year, the retailer pledged more than £300m to upgrade and extend existing stores in 2026.
The work includes energy-saving measures such as fridge doors and the use of natural refrigerants to help reduce carbon emissions.
